How YouTube handles loudness
YouTube normalises loud uploads downward toward roughly −14 LUFS, but it does not turn quiet content up. That asymmetry means mastering hotter than −14 gains you nothing — it just gets attenuated — while mastering too quietly leaves you permanently quieter than everything around you.
The YouTube preset targets −14 LUFS for this reason. It is a floor rather than a ceiling.
A note on claims
Every sound on this site carries a risk badge. Green sounds are original, public domain, or explicitly cleared, and are safe on a monetised channel. Amber sounds have unverified origins — most creators use them without issue, but they may match an automated reference. Red sounds are not offered for download at all.
If your channel is monetised and you would rather not think about it, filter to green and use those.
